Emigration has represented a sign of identity for Galicia and is a key historical and cultural feature. Emigration to the United States (US), although less extensive compared to other American destinations, has a series of characteristics that give it a notable singularity. Although still scarce, different studies have provided information about the profile of the Galician migrant to the North American country, and about the complex processes of adaptation-integration-assimilation, and the creation of transnational identities. However, the registration and recruitment into the US Armed Forces of Galicians residing in this country during World War II has been not explored and is known only through the occasional appearance of personal stories. The systematic investigation of these stories can serve as a basis for the knowledge and recovery of the memory of the Galician emigrants who suffered this extreme degree of assimilation.
