Thought and Emotions in The Corbacho by The Archpriest of Talavera

This article seeks to explore the ways in which representations are constructed in the Corbacho, a text written around 1438 by Alfonso Martínez de Toledo, Archpriest of Talavera. With this objective, we will consider several concepts developed within the so-called new cultural history and the history of emotions, including the notions of the “real” and the “ideal” (Maurice Godelier), of representation (Roger Chartier) or reflections on the notion of “emotion” (Barbara Rosenwein, Monique Scheer). With this in mind, first we will analyse the structure of the text, its authorship and its context. Then, we will analyse the ways of constructing the Archpriest’s thought, highlighting the opposition between “love of God” and “worldly love”, which serves as the axis for Alfonso Martínez de Toledo’s interpretation of the society and sexual morality of his time. Thirdly, we will look into the resources used by the Archpriest to make his speech convincing, using a precise emotional program, that seeks to create aversion towards sex outside marriage.
